Palm Desert is holding its first “online garage sale” for surplus equipment on the municibid.com website.

The items up for bid are a 1972 Oshkosh snorkel fire truck (opening bid $1,000) and a 1996 Ford Escort ($200). That auction ends at 3 p.m. Aug. 11.

Also, two diesel air compressors ($50), on which bidding closes at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 10.

City spokesman David Hermann said the city will watch the results of this online auction before deciding whether to do any more.

So far the Escort fares the best; by Wednesday afternoon it had racked up 11 bids topping out at $1,050.

It’s also the only one of the four items that can be legally operated in California, according to the municibid page.

The diesel air compressors, 6 and 12 years old, would have to be retrofitted to meet current air quality standards.

The fire truck can’t be sold, registered or operated in the state at all.

To see or bid on the items, go to municibid.com and search for user PDPW.
